On May 31st, recognized internationally as “World No Tobacco Day,” the Ayo! team headed to Charles Aznavour square, one of the most beloved spots of residents and guests of Yerevan. The team actively promoted the benefits of no smoking habits, and highlighted the effects of smoke on non-smokers— especially children. While several team members distributed leaflets to raise awareness, others invited smokers to sacrifice their cigarettes in exchange for menthol candies with fliers detailing the health impacts of second-hand smoke on smokers and non-smokers.
We received active media coverage of the event, partly also due to the announcement of RA Minister of Health regarding legislative changes that will lead to banning smoking in closed public areas. This legislation will also increase the prices of cigarettes, ban advertisement, and take other measures to reduce the number of smokers in Armenia by 30-40%. Currently around 50% of men and 3-4% of women above 16 are among smokers in Armenia.
Meanwhile, we at Ayo! continue working with artists to make impactful public art murals that will remind people why it is a better idea to get rid of this useless and harming habit.
