Many of us don’t even know what a defibrillator is. So, let’s start from the beginning: What exactly is a defibrillator?
It is a device that can save a person’s life in mere seconds. If we break it down into very simple terms we could say that a defibrillator is a machine that transfers electric currents to a heart that has stopped beating, which essentially jolt it back into action so that it starts pumping again. In many western European countries and in the United States you can find many of these devices in public places like parking lots, metro stations, airports and shopping malls. That’s not always the case for Armenia, however.
Back in 2013 we found out that ambulances in the Tavush Region are not equipped with defibrillators. Tavush, which is one of Armenia’s poorest, is also one of its most dangerous, as there is frequent gunfire along the border with Azerbaijan. So, we at Ayo! immediately came up with the idea of raising funds in order to get defibrillators into those ambulances.
Many eminent doctors in Armenia and abroad joined our campaign. We aimed to buy 4 defibrillators, to cover a large part of the region.
The good news is that as a result of our fundraising efforts, your generosity, and some in-kind donations we surpassed our goal by acquiring 5 defibrillators in total! The one is designed for trainings, so that doctors at the border learn how to use this life-saving device so that more lives can ultimately be saved.
We would like to also mention that with the remainder of the money that we raised, we were able to buy stretchers and first aid kits for the hospitals in three villages in addition to our saving lives mission.
We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who helped us to make this project a reality.
Let’s say Ayo! to saving lives.
